Fly Away

(James Downham)

One day Jenny woke up to find that the years had passed and they weren’t kind
The girl in the mirror with the sparkling eyes was someone else she didn’t recognize
And the gang all around she was calling friends were all self-destructing, playing pretend
That the past didn’t matter, it was all okay – but Jenny knew better; it would end today

‘Cause she was living too fast to slow down
Nothing ever could last in this town

So Jenny had to get away
Spread here wings and fly away
Find herself a better day
Find herself a better way

So Jenny walked out and never looked behind; She started running and she made up her mind
She wasn’t running away, she was running to all the dreams that she’d dreamed that had never come true
And she didn’t stop running ’til she reached L.A., she found a room to rent and a part to play
Love came easy and fame came fast – she was living for today, not stuck in the past

Where she was living too fast to slow down
Nothing ever could last in that town

So Jenny had to get away
Spread here wings and fly away
Find herself a better day
Find herself a better way

Late at night as she’s drifting to sleep
Her mind would turn to where those people might be
The ones who told her she could never achieve
Ones who never believed; but they should have believed

So Jenny packed a bag and she flew back home; did anyone make it, she just had to know
She stepped off the plane and stepped back in time, and she could see right away, and she was already crying
She saw the same old people in worse-off places – full of resentment and pain on their faces
The gang all around she was calling friends had all self-destructed, playing pretend

‘Cause they were living too fast to slow down
Nothing ever could last in that town

So Jenny had to get away
Spread here wings and fly away
Find herself a better day
Find herself a better way

Jenny had to get away
Spread her wings and fly away
Oh, fly away – oh, fly away
